Sommelier note: This beautiful small domaine is situated in the hillsides not far from Montpellier, in the award winning wine growing region called Montpeyroux. It has its own Cru which means special terroir! La Jasse Castel has only 12 ha. (30 acres) planted with vines, spread around 7 parcels. Each parcel with a different grape variety, varying soils and different orientation to the sun gives a different result in the fruit. This provides a broad range of blending material for the very fine winemaker! Pascale Rivière is in charge here and she’s part of the group of female winemakers called the ‘Vinifilles’.

La Jasse means sheepfold, the shelter for the sheep and often the shepherd, which are common stone huts throughout the Languedoc. This La Jasse wine is a cuvée dedicated to Pascale’s lovely Syrah vineyard called Mas du Goulou. Light clay and rich chalk in the deep soils make it perfect for Syrah. This grape needs poor soils so it will work hard to get roots deep in the ground. A lovely minerality in the wine is the result. One and One can be Three if you blend this fine juice with Grenache Noir! These two blend very well and are completely opposite in aroma. Grenache is round and has sweet fruit; Syrah is  powerful and spicy. With a touch of Carignan from old vines, this wine is rich and complex, has a deep, profound and long aftertaste that you never want to lose. The maturation of 12 months on French oak brings the potential of these fine grapes to their height. Awsomm, as we say in the trade!
