Vineyard Notes
Domaine l’Hortus is located in one of the cooler areas of the Pic Saint Loup appellation, with vineyards nestled in a stunningly beautiful valley between the two limestone cliffs of the famous Pic Saint Loup and the Montagne de Hortus. The valley offers the Sauvignon Blanc, Roussanne, Viognier, Chardonnay, Petit Manseng, and Muscat grapes protection from the elements. The soil is comprised of alluvial deposits mixed with both hard & soft limestone.
Production Notes
The organic domaine uses manure as natural fertilizer, copper and sulfur when mildew forms, and relies on indigenous yeast for fermentation. The yields are very low ensuring the high quality of all of their wines: 25 to 35 hl/ha for land parcels with a density of 5,500 to 7,150 plants per hectare. Grapes undergo direct pressing and cold settling. Slow fermentation takes place over three to four weeks and the wine is aged for four months in stainless steel tanks. Then, the wine is bottled at the end of winter.
Winemaker Notes
Domaine de L'Hortus was established in 1978 when Jean Orliac, a professor of agriculture and avid rock climber, fell “head over heels” in love with the Languedoc region and purchased land in and around the beautiful Pic St Loup cliffs. After years spent befriending the vines and reviving 50 hectares of wooded slopes, Jean and his family bottled their first wine in 1990. The Domaine de l’Hortus team consists of four siblings: Marie, Francois, Yves and Martin Orliac. Eleven full time employees and forty seasonal workers are also part of this exceptional award winning team.
