Sommelier note: Lidewij van Wilgen started a new life in 2002 when she moved from The Netherlands to the Languedoc and bought her dream domaine. The vineyards were restored, the cellar renovated and lots of energy was put into rebuilding the main house so she could live there with her 3 young daughters. Now Lidewij is one of the ‘Leading Ladies of Languedoc’ and is highly regarded as one of the top ‘Viticultrices’ (female wine makers) by Jancis Robinson and many other wine writers. Her wines are served in Michelin starred restaurants throughout Europe.
The land, the ‘terroir’, speaks through Lidewij’s wines, all made from organic, hand-picked grapes. This L’Unique is truly exceptional. Lidewij saves the grapes from her oldest vineyards for this cuvée. L'Unique is a blend of 60% Syrah from a 40 year old vineyard and 40% Grenache from their oldest vineyard, 70 years old. Both plots yield only 28 hl/ha and all of the grapes are harvested and selected by hand. After a classical, but very controlled vinification, directly after pressing, the wine is put in an exceptional 600 liter barrel of the finest quality of French oak. Here it remains for 2 years. The result, in the capable hands of Ms. van Wilgen, is an extremely pure and precise wine, with beautiful cooked fruit flavors and striking freshness. This indicates you can very easily keep this wine for several more years. If you can bear to wait, let this wine sit one or two years to mellow into something straight from heaven. But like us, if you want to drink it now, be sure to decant it an hour before enjoying and serve slightly chilled 16-18 C or 60 to 65 F. Your first bottle will not be your last!!
