"Le Grand Mayol", plank in Occitan (regional language), are fresh grounds exposed to the north, at the bottom of the valley, ideal for a white wine. Certified organic and farmed with great care. Harvested by hand and aged on lees in stainless steel tanks and in new barrels (10% of the cuvée).
Cathy Izarn runs the 18 ha. (44 acres) of vines of Domaine Borie la Vitarèle with great passion. She lost her husband in a recent, tragic farming accident and she and her daughter Camille have taken the reins confidently. The land has been fully BIO/Organic since 1998. The mountainous terroir consists of white limestone soils, schiste and gravel/clay. She says: ‘Our soils are alive, our vines look happy and my wines have character’. You can find many local, Mediterranean varietals planted like Bourboulenc, Vermentino and Clairette for white and Syrah, Grenache Noir, Carignan, and Mourvèdre for red. Modern vinification without much intervention will produce honest, fruitful and elegant wines with character.
Le Grand Mayol is a spectacular blend of the 3 local varietals, Bourboulenc, Vermentino and Clairette, and the blend is like a perfect marriage! These are all grapes which ripen late in the season so they deliver rich flavors with nice freshness and acidity and a lovely finish. Think yellow: pineapple, pears, ripe yellow plums. Hand harvested grapes are lightly pressed, aged on the lees in steel tanks, with 10% going into oak barrels. Drink this fantastic wine slightly chilled (13 C/55 F) just by the glass or with cold cuts like dried ham, or any poultry or fish dish. Excellent also with the local goat cheeses!
