Sommelier and Princess note: Cathy Izarn runs the 45 acres (18 ha.) of vines of Domaine la Vitarèle with a great passion. It has been fully BIO/Organic since 1998. The terroir consist of white limestone soils, schiste and gravel/clay. She says: ‘Our soils are alive, our vines look happy and my wines have character’. Cathy lost her husband in a tragic vineyard accident and she has shown her own character by continuing the fine wine making tradition of this domaine. We all admire her.
You can find many local, Mediterranean varietals planted here like Bourboulenc, Vermentino and Clairette for white and Syrah, Grenache Noir, Carignan, Mourvèdre and Merlot for red. Modern vinification without much intervention produces honest, fruitful and elegant wines with character. We call them “wine without makeup”.
Midi Rouge is a cuvée dedicated to the ‘Battle of the Old Ones’ the hard life the old vines have here on altitude, with the sun, the strong Languedoc winds and the drought then rain. Hard life but the result is outstanding in good vintages! This wine is a result of all the struggle and endurance of the vines to thrive; the best of the best grapes end up in this Midi Rouge. Of course all grapes are hand-picked and carefully sorted. The blend is from different varietals coming from different terroir so for the winemaker a challenge. The result in Cathy’s hands is a majestic wine: deep colour, purple when young, a generous nose with strawberry and cassis, some light wood grounding. In the mouth you feel the quality of this wine: soft and rich start with lots of fruit, in the evolvement the wine builds up with grippy tannins, and the ‘finale’ is GRAND! Lots of fruit again, nice firm tannins but soft, smoky aftertaste with hints of chocolate and tobacco. Drink this wine with good friends and great food! Your favorite beef and lamb dishes will shine when swirled in your mouth with Midi Rouge. Heaven...Open this wine at least an hour before you drink it and serve at a fresh temperature of not more than 65F.
