This rich and complex naturally sweet wine (vin doux naturel) is made from the rare Gray Grenache grape, and after vinification is aged a minimum of 7 years ‘Rancio’ style, partially exposed to the air, before bottling.  The result is a very deep topaz color, with shimmering lights inside. The nose is enticing with scents of grilled nuts, plump prunes and exotic spices like cinnamon, cloves and toasted nutmeg.  The long and silky mouth is rich with flavors of caramel, cashew nuts, cocoa, dried figs and a touch of bitter almond. This ‘Rancio’ is luscious with its silky, soft tannins and aromatic complexity accompanied by the perfect amount of natural grape sweetness and fresh lift on the long finish. Travel to exotic places with this beautiful companion by your side. Serve well chilled.

Enjoy with Walnut Chocolate Ganache Tart; Caramelized Apple Tart; Foie Gras; Salty Blue Cheeses; your favorite desserts made from chocolate or cooked fruits; salty snacks and hard cheeses.

Wine Profile
Vineyard Notes
Cascastel is located in the wild area of the Corbieres appellation. Grapes are harvested from tiny vineyards with shale soils on hillsides.
Production Notes
The cuvée is aged in stainless steel vats for 5 years, then transferred to oak barrels for a minimum of 2 years. The wine is aged in barrels and under a veil of air, so the particular aromas desired for this ‘Rancio’ wine can develop. The barrels are never completely emptied, they alway keep 20% of the old vintage to which the young wine is added. It is said that this is how the "memory " of this wine is preserved. This technique is called "Rancio". Oxidative wines are wines that have been deliberately exposed to oxygen during the winemaking process.
Winemaker Notes
The cooperative cellar of Les Maitres Vignerons de Cascastel was founded in 1921. Before this collective initiative, the village of Cascastel was made up exclusively of independent winegrowers. Merging created a powerful synergy of expert small vineyard grape growers, collective wisdom, and shared technology and resources. The foundation of the cooperative is solidarity, fairness, and democracy. As a result, these very small, artisan winegrowers bring out the best in the vines, the wines, and each other. They all benefit from the fine winemaking skills of José Navarro who moved from the Rhône Valley to become their winemaker. The grape growers are financially rewarded for high quality grapes, not just the weight of the fruit they deliver.
