From the cool cliffs of the beautiful Pic Saint-Loup comes this friendly, very drinkable blend of Grenache with a dash of Syrah. This is a charming, plum and baked cherry laced wine that has a lively fresh lift and smooth tannins carrying through to the plush finish. A perfect wine to share over a long barbeque feast, with vegetable tian for our vegetarian friends.  Excellent in warmer weather when slightly chilled.

Serve with barbecued and grilled meats or Vegetable Tian with Gruyère.

Wine Profile
Vineyard Notes
Domaine l’Hortus is located in one of the cooler sections of the appellation of Pic Saint Loup, with vineyards nestled in a valley between the two limestone cliffs of Pic Saint Loup and the Montagne de Hortus. The winemaker states that their vineyard is set “between cliffs and wild garrigue” and the climate is “at the winds’ mercy”. The soil is comprised of alluvial deposits mixed with both hard & soft limestone. The vineyards are made up of a patchwork of small parcels over many expositions and variations of soil, each paired with an appropriate varietal.
Production Notes
Very short maceration of 4 to 5 days, fermentation of 2 to 3 weeks at low temp. Aged for 4 months in tank.
Winemaker Notes
The winery was established in 1978 when Jean Orliac, an agriculture professor and avid rock climber, fell in love with the area and purchased land in and around these cliffs. After years of befriending vines and transforming 50 hectares of wooded slopes in disrepair, the family finally bottled their own wine in 1990. The Domaine de l’Hortus team consists of 4 siblings: Marie, Francois, Yves and Martin Orliac. There are also eleven full time employees, along with 40 seasonal workers, that make up the team.
Food Pairing Notes
Serve with barbecued and grilled meats or Vegetable Tian with Gruyère.
Other Notes
Ageability: Drink now or through 2026. “Le Loup dans la Bergerie” means The Wolf in the Sheepfold, or wolf in sheep’s clothing.
