Wine Profile
Vineyard Notes
Terre des Dames still has the same structure as 200 years ago: small plots on different levels, surrounded by low walls and scrublands. No synthetic pesticides or fertilizers are applied. Most of the year a natural grass gives life to the ground. Everything possible is done to preserve the old vines, with thier deep root system, they are the most resistant to global warming. The great chance of our valley is its particular microclimate: several soutterraine springs and rivers give a freshness to the roots found in wine. The large barriers of trees and shrubs between the plots maintain the faîcheur, protect against diseases and guarantee biodiversity. Certified organic (Ecocert) for more than ten years. 14 hectares of vines divided into 25 small plots, clay, limestone and flint and full of marine fossils
Production Notes
14 hectares of vines divided into 25 small plots - the entire domaine. Yields below 40hl/ha – all harvested and sorted by hand, 6000 bottles produced of Le Rose.
Winemaker Notes
The winemaker, Lidewij van Wilgen has lived two lives already: First she made a career in advertising at Saatchi & Saatchi and Lowe in Amsterdam. At thirty she was head of the strategy department — she had reached the ceiling and the choice was there: Keep on doing the same thing for thirty more years, or start a new life. Together with her ex-husband, a Dutch creative director, she chose the latter. Being wine enthusiasts, they started to look for the ideal place to make their own wine. After visits to Bordeaux and the Northern Rhône they became intrigued by what people called: ‘The new world of wine in France' – The Languedoc. So, where else to go than Southern France where all still seemed possible? Lidewij found a beautiful farm house in a small valley with perfect terroir. She makes luscious, beautiful, organic wines that have received awards from Decanter, Wine Spectator and glowing reviews from British wine maven Jancis Robinson. We literally can't get enough of her wines!
