This single-vineyard Syrah is an organic, full-bodied powerhouse that delights with its velvety mouthfeel and notes of raspberry, licorice, mint and wild brambles. La Perle Rare has buckets of spicy black fruit character on the nose with a background of smoky, toasty oak.  Black fruit flavors dominate the palate, yet it has a very elegant balance and a real freshness and purity of fruit.

Serve this bold red with all things lamb: roast leg of lamb with rosemary, lamb tagine with prunes, and slow cooked shoulder of lamb with shallot and white wine glaze.

Wine Profile
Vineyard Notes
To say Katie Jones looks for vineyards no-one else wants would only be a slight exaggeration. Most other growers in the area wouldn’t be interested in her modest twelve hectares of vines spread across vineyards in Maury (her first), Paziols and Tuchan. The sites are too small, too remote, too steep and too much hard work. She looks for low yields with high quality, and the rather poor, sloping ground that the very old, traditional vines cling to gives her just that. It means most of the work including harvesting has to be done by hand, but the results are more than worth the toil. The soils for this cuvée are made up of large limestone rounded stones known as ‘poudingues’ and the vineyard is sheltered from the strong north wind by tall hedgerows of box wood and olive trees. The grapes for this special wine are grown in one this one small vineyard in the village of Tuchan, where the Languedoc meets the Roussillon. The vines were originally sourced from Cote Rotie. An electric fence surrounds the vineyards to dissuade pesky wild boars from feasting on the sweet, ripe grapes as harvest approaches.
Production Notes
The vines were propagated from vine cuttings sourced from the Cote Rotie. The grapes are hand-harvested and fermentation takes place in 2 open-topped 400 liter oak barrels. Destalking is done by hand and someone actually gets into the barrels to do the pigeage. After 10 days the wine is pressed and aged for 12 months in the finest French oak barrels. Only 600 bottles were produced. This wine is ‘rare’ because Katie makes only 2-3 barrels per year.
Winemaker Notes
Winemaker Katie Jones is one of the women leading the Languedoc wine making renaissance. Every wine she creates has a distinctive personality, shaped by the old vines, wild herbs of the garrigue and her own care and passion. She prefers old, small-scale vineyards with low yields and rare grape varieties. She joyfully embraces the challenge of farming these vineyards, including working with narrow, "horse-width" rows planted in a time before the modern tractor existed. Domaine Jones started out with a winemaking philosophy to which they’ve stuck, which is to vinify the vineyards separately, rather than mixing, so they know the quality coming from each. This method requires a lot of space, so they’ve bought something that has it in abundance, an old train shed. Finished in 1905 in the village of Tuchan, it was used as overnight accommodation for the Tuchan Express, a steam train that could reach speeds of up to 5mph. Closed in 1935, this much-loved local landmark, once renovated, is to have a new lease of life as their winery.
