This organic, Carignan-dominant red was awarded 90 points by Robert Parker.  A supple, easy-drinking cuvée, the mouth is full-bodied and ripe with red fruit. The mild tannins are similar in feel to ground cinnamon. An expressive nose of cherries and red plums balances with a lingering mineral finish, without any overt oak character.

Enjoy with beef brisket, lamb gyros, and cured meats. Excellent paired with Basque cheese, young Manchego cheese, and herb and spice-influenced cuisine.

Wine Profile
Vineyard Notes
Set in the foothills of the Pyrenees, Roussillon forms a geologic amphitheater — open to the Mediterranean to the east, bordered by the Massif des Corbières to the north, and the Pyrenees to the south. The vines average one thousand years old with the first traces of cultivation dating back to Greek antiquity. Domaine des Schistes is located at the crossroads of the Agly valley terroirs in the towns of Estagel, Tautavel, and Maury. The diversity of soils, altitudes, and micro-climates supports a wide range of wines with distinct personalities. Wines are also influenced by the mineral of local shale massifs and the abundance of Roussillon grape varieties. The domaine cultivates 50 hectares situated between Estagel and Tautavel. The soils are primarily schist. The wines are classified in AOP Côtes du Roussillon Villages, cru Tautavel, and Maury for dry wines, as well as in Rivesaltes, Muscat de Rivesaltes, and Maury for Vins Doux Naturels . Five hectares are also cultivated on the alluvial plain of Estagel, an IGP Côtes Catalanes region. The Carignan and Grenache Noir for this blend were cultivated on a 70-year-old plot on the southern limestone buttress of the Massif des Corbières in soils of schist and marl at an altitude of 220 meters.
Production Notes
Grapes are hand-harvested and aged in concrete vats for 12 months. Whole cluster fermentation takes place using native yeast. Maceration occurs over a period of 15 days with daily rehydration of the cap. This is an infusion, rather than an extraction process. Fermentation is spontaneous.
Winemaker Notes
Family-run Domaine Des Schistes was founded in the early days of the winemaking renaissance in the Languedoc-Roussillon. In 1989, the grandparents and parents of the current young winemaker, Mikael, broke away from the local cooperative winery to start their own adventure. Since then, Domaine Des Schistes has been creating delicious wines from grapes grown and harvested in their own vineyards. Regional tradition is honored as is openness to innovation and organic winemaking. The bold move to independence benefited wine lovers and helped usher in a new era of winemaking — from large production cooperatives to fine, small artisanal wines.
