An organic, biodynamic red blend from an ancient terroir, Clos du Prieur is a full-bodied wine balanced by dark fruit and spice. Inviting red fruit aromas enhance the cooler-climate palate which expresses an intriguing herbal complexity. Exuberant in character, yet elegant and finely crafted. Awarded 92 points by Decanter magazine.

Bold enough to complement a wide range of meats including pork, poultry, beef, lamb and game.

Wine Profile
Vineyard Notes
This domaine practices organic and biodynamic viticulture. Located in one of the cooler sections of the Pic Saint Loup appellation, the vineyards of Domaine l’Hortus are nestled in a valley between the limestone cliffs of Pic Saint Loup and Montagne de Hortus. The soil is comprised of alluvial deposits mixed with hard and soft limestone. The winemaker humorously describes the vineyard as situated “between cliffs and wild garrigue” and the climate as “at the mercy of the winds.”
Production Notes
Winemaking is carried out in a renovated cellar, restored by the domaine after having been abandoned for three generations. Fermentation takes place in concrete tanks with natural yeast. The Grenache is aged in restored concrete tanks. The Syrah is aged in oak barrels.
Winemaker Notes
Domaine de L'Hortus was established in 1978 when Jean Orliac, a professor of agriculture and avid rock climber, fell “head over heels” with the region and purchased land in and around the beautiful Pic St Loup cliffs. After years spent befriending the vines and reviving 50 hectares of wooded slopes, Jean and his family bottled their first wine in 1990. The Domaine de l’Hortus team consists of 4 siblings: Marie, Francois, Yves, and Martin Orliac. 11 full time employees and 40 seasonal workers make up the rest of the team.
Food Pairing Notes
Bold enough to complement a wide range of meats including pork, poultry, beef, lamb, and game.
