Dark red fruit, spiciness, leather tones, and a long finish make this an all-occasion, “knife-and-fork” wine. A hearty, Syrah, Grenache and Cinsault blend, Cuvée des Chevaliers reflects the rich history of the Milhau Lacugue estate which was the site of a Roman villa and later offered rest and refreshment to medieval pilgrims en route to sacred sites in Spain.

This full-bodied red loves spice! Serve with Braised Lamb with Cumin and Cinnamon or Black Currant Lacquered Duck Breast with Mashed Yams.

Wine Profile
Vineyard Notes
Grenache Noir, Syrah and Cinsault grapes ripen on high, sun-warmed slopes and are influenced by the complex geology of hard limestone and red clay soils.
Production Notes
This vinification process includes temperature-controlled, slow fermentation and 18 months of maturation in foudres, large oak barrels. A foudre is a French wine term used to describe a large wooden vat, which is between 20-120 hectolitres in size (e.g. 1 hectolitre = 100 litres). These large oak barrels vary enormously in size but are significantly larger than the normal wine oak barrels.
Winemaker Notes
The Milhau Lacugue estate has been a fascinating cultural crossroads for millenia. Once an ancient Roman estate known as “Villa Emilio,” the property sits on an ancient trading and travelling route which carried pilgrims to the Commanderie de Campagnoles and the Hospitaliers of St. John of Jerusalem (owners of the estate from the 12th to 18th century). Home to a chateau with a view to the Mediterranean and numerous outbuildings the property offered sustenance to medieval pilgrims travelling to Compostela. Acquired in the mid-1900s by the Milhau family, Jean is the winemaker now who also tends the vines of the estate and sells the wines out of his family “cave”.
Food Pairing Notes
