This rare Carignan Gris varietal is a gift of golden flavors: fresh pear, chamomile, and quince.  A white wine with a dynamic personality, this organic cuvée expresses both bright, crisp notes and herbal smokiness. Because of the rarity of Carignan Gris, the domaine produced only 800 bottles of this wine. We are thrilled to be able to offer it to wine lovers in the US.

The wine’s lovely dryness enhances Fisherman’s Pie, oysters, mussels, roast chicken, and grilled fish.

Wine Profile
Vineyard Notes
Domaine Jones maintains a tiny vineyard with only 30 acres of vines. The soils are comprised of limestone and schist. 2017 Carignan Gris was sourced from the domaine’s small Carignan Gris vineyard which lies just outside the village of Tuchan where her winemaking cave is located in an old steam locomotive shed. There are only 12 acres of Carignan Gris vines in all of France. Katie Jones, founder of Domaine Jones, describes her vineyards and the experience of farming the rare Carignan Gris vines as follows: "The sites are too small, too remote, and too much hard work. Exactly the way I like them! I’m looking for low yields with high quality, and the rather poor, sloping ground that the very old, traditional vines cling to gives me just that. Most of the work, including harvesting, has to be done by hand. But the results are more than worth the toil. And you can always take the occasional break, sit on one of the dry stone walls under an olive tree and take in the view." “Carignan Gris is a pain in the ‘derriere’ for a winemaker as it is a very late ripener. It actually ripens after all the reds and still comes in at a lower alcohol. I imagine this is why most of it has been ripped up. In our first vintage with this grape we thought that it was never going to ripen. We finally picked it mid-October.”
Production Notes
Katie vinifies each parcel of hand-harvested grapes separately so she knows exactly what she has. She makes many wines, but they are all of very small quantities coming from an estate of only 30 acres. 2017 Carignan Gris is vinified in stainless steel vats.
Winemaker Notes
Winemaker Katie Jones is one of the women leading the Languedoc wine making renaissance. Every wine she creates has a distinctive personality, shaped by the old vines, the wild herbs of the garrigue, and her own care and passion. She prefers old, small-scale vineyards with low yields and rare grape varieties. She joyfully embraces the challenge of farming these vineyards, including working with narrow, "horse-width" rows planted in a time before the modern tractor existed.
Food Pairing Notes
