A robust white food wine with a nose of ripe pear with iodized and aniseed notes.  A dense and saline mouth, full of freshness and minerality. Iodized scents emanating from the glass recall the sea winds and  landscape around Banyuls. One of the great whites from the South of France, thoroughly impressive with its depth and length, and it ages well too, if you can wait.

Serve with roasted chicken with tarragon butter; grilled fish with herbed lemon butter; aged cheese (cow or sheep) or sautéed potatoes with parsley, peppers, aged sheep's cheese and fine herbs.

Wine Profile
Vineyard Notes
This highly regarded domaine has 30 hectares of vines/parcels in Banyuls, on breathtaking slopes overlooking the Mediterranean Sea and the border with Spain. The terrain dictates parcels with a variety of exposures, soils (though schist dominates), altitudes and grape varieties. The vines themselves average 50 years of age and are densely planted to increase competition between the roots. Some parcels have a mixture of grape varieties grown together.
Production Notes
Direct press, fermentation in barrels, aged 8 months on the lees, daily stirring during fermentation then once a week until December, bottling in the spring. The domaine bottles around 80,000 bottles every year, L’Argile 10,000 annually. Low yields 20 to 25 hl/ha. The wines are not fined.
Winemaker Notes
The Banyuls appellation unfolds on narrow and steep terraces rising dramatically from the Mediterranean Sea. The vineyards are rooted in stony schist soils and benefit from exceptional climatic conditions influenced by sea, mountain, sun and wind. The brothers had not grown up on the land at Banyuls but returned to it in 1976 and 1981 respectively, and today Thierry takes care of winemaking with Jean-Emmanuel, his son, while Marc administers the business side of things.
Food Pairing Notes
Serve with roasted chicken with tarragon butter; grilled fish with herbed lemon butter; aged cheese (cow or sheep) or sautéed potatoes with parsley, peppers, aged sheep's cheese and fine herbs.
Other Notes
Ageability: long aging possible (up to 2036) but it is very pleasant to drink it now while it is young. Serve chilled at 50°F.
