This eminently drinkable blend of Syrah, Carignan, and Grenache Noir has a sultry, sweet nose of forest berries, currants, and cacao nibs with a subtle hint of fresh coffee. The mildly spicy palate is concentrated and silky but still fresh. The immediate freshness gives way to flavors of cooked raspberry, strawberries, and red plum with a note of freshly tanned leather. Smooth, juicy tannins offer smokiness and a lovely mouthfeel that lingers in the finish.

The pleasant roundness of Petit Mod'Amour Rouge pairs well with beef and veal ragu, and  vegetable stews.

Wine Profile
Vineyard Notes
Cotes Catalan is one of the most exciting and understated IGPs in the Roussillon, possibly in the South of France. Stretching from the base of the Pyrenees down to the Mediterranean coast, it covers a range of Mediterranean terroirs surrounded by garrigue-covered hills and dry, schiste soils. The hot climate and low annual rainfall ensures that the native varieties of Grenache, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, Roussanne, Viogner and Carignan ripen with concentration and power. Fresh breezes from both the Mediterranean and the mountains impart freshness and acidity to the grapes. Old vines and schistous soils produce intensely mineral and flavorful reds and whites. The vineyards are composed primarily of well-drained gneiss, in which indigenous red and white Roussillon varieties thrive, including 115-year-old Carignan vines.
Production Notes
Domaine Modat practices restrained extraction, fermentation with wild yeasts, and uses as little sulphur as possible. The winemaking includes gentle destemming and a cold pre-fermentation maceration of 24 hours to extract the fruit. Thermoregulated fermentation and maceration is employed as well as light punching down for 18 to 24 days, depending on the tank. Aging takes place in stainless steel vats.
Winemaker Notes
Domaine Modat represents a return to winemaker Philippe Modat’s Catalan roots, where his grandfather once owned vineyards. While studying law in Bordeaux, Philippe developed a passion for wine that set him on a journey to founding his own domaine. In 2007, he and his father purchased land and vines in Cassagnes village in the heart of the Roussillon. In September 2008, they built a modern winery using eco-friendly organic materials equipped with thermo-regulated stainless steel tanks and new oak barrels. The estate is now run by his two sons.
Food Pairing Notes
The pleasant roundness of Petit Mod'Amour Rouge pairs well with beef and veal ragu, and vegetable stews.
