After eruptions of Vesuvius many Roman winemakers settled elsewhere. La Livinière was one of the designated areas for the displaced Romans to plant vines, and it was perfect according to them. Nowadays La Livinière belongs at the top in the Minervois, and has it’s own Cru. Domaine Borie de Maurel was created by Michel Escande, who changed his life in 1989 by dropping his passion, sailing, and settling with his wife on the mainland. They bought, with borrowed money, 5 ha. of vineyard, a wine cellar and a house. With the tenacity of a sailor and the faith of a peasant farmer, Michel learned about his land, he listened until he understood that he was in possession of a real treasure. This showed from the first cuvées of Sylla which the international press picked up at the beginning of the 90s. After this they re-named him “the wizard of Felines”.
Belle de Nuit, this Beauty of the Night, is an exceptional cuvée. Completely based around old vines of Grenache Noir this is a voluptuous wine which will enchant you! The vineyard is tucked away in the hillsides of the Montagne Noire where the vines cling to rugged slopes and deliver vibrant beautiful fruit. The soil is a mix of flint, silica clay, and limestone. The hand harvested grapes undergo a long maceration on the skins and maturation in tank and bottle for 18 months. No oak! This wine doesn’t need oak, it is already so complex! Delicious after 2-3 years, but, if you can, keep some bottles for 5-10 years and you will be amazed! As the winemaker says ”Yes be patient and in 5 or 10 years it’s a gypsy dream that you’ll see dancing under the Seville moonlight in your glass.” This wine is complex and alluring.
